It’s a given that when we interview a potential supervisor, they need to be knowledgeable and experienced. Figuring out whether they have what it takes is normally pretty easy. Anybody that has been around for long enough knows very quickly whether somebody is full of shit or knows what they’re talking about. That includes the little things like what their hands and boots look like, to the more important aspects like what terminology they use.
Once we establish that someone has the minimum knowledge and experience needed, we move on to the most important part to us: What kind of person are they? The three traits we look for in leaders are:
HUMILITY is not thinking less of yourself, but rather thinking of others more. It is our duty to serve those we lead. We are not given titles to exalt ourselves, but so that we may serve others. At Carolina Bridge, our number-one mission is to help people reach their full potential, which takes sacrifice and service on our part. Humility also means being able to work on a team and putting that team ahead of yourself. A good leader carries out the plan like it was their own, no matter what they think of it.
HUNGRY means sharing in the team mission and doing whatever it takes to accomplish it ― not just doing it because you have to, but leading with energy and passion. It also means striving to be the best version of yourself, because if you don’t, how can you guide others to do their best work? Great leaders have a positive attitude and are able to rally people around a cause.
PEOPLE SMART means knowing how to positively engage people, and inspire them to accomplish great things. Also, we must be able to hold them accountable in a proactive way. Good team members speak highly of others on the team ― they do not gossip or put others down.
How successful somebody will be as a supervisor is so much more than what projects they have been involved with. The aspect that matters most is how they treat others. Once you have the minimum skills needed, it is all about how you treat other people.
